Support / Beware minimising the View Movement form
« on: March 10, 2023, 09:53:22 »
After selecting a movement it is useful to view the movement and select 'Table Card'. This shows where to place the boards for the first round which is essential if playing a Howell movement. We have found that if you minimise the form rather than closing it, the form disappears completely and cannot be recovered to close it. In this state BridgeScore is frozen and nothing can be done.

General Discussion / Re: Time for a Pairs Bridge Playing App?
« on: October 22, 2020, 02:56:16 »
I agree with John that there are already online bridge games available. BBO, BridgeClubLive and Stepbridge can all be used to set up a club game. But the ability to review the bidding and card play is a great tool for review with partner afterwards or for reviewing with new players to help identify their mistakes. John, would it take much to add a facility for North to record these items during play? With an option to bypass recording for those who do not wish to take their mind off the game.

BridgePal Phones/Tablets / Connectivity Issues Resolved
« on: November 15, 2019, 09:04:08 »
I recently experienced problems getting one or two scorers (we use 7" Lenovo T3s) to connect to the BridgePal system. Clicking on "Retry" would then get an error message -2. I have now worked out a solution to this problem. First step is to set a fixed IP address for the computer on the router this is achieved as follows:-
1) Press the 'windows' key
2) type cmd <return>
3) type ipconfig /all
4) Make a note of the following settings
IPv4 Address =
Subnet mask =
Default Gateway =
DNS Servers 1 =
DNS Servers 2 =
5) Press the 'windows' key
6) type control panel <return>
7) select 'Network and Sharing Centre'
8) Click on 'change adapter settings'
9) Right click on the active connection and select 'Properties'
10) Select Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4)
11) Click on 'Properties'
12) Note the current settings in case things go wrong
13) Select 'Use the following IP address:' and enter the IP address, the Subnet mask and the Default Gateway from above
14) Enter the preferred DNS server and Alternate DNS server numbers from above
15) Tick the 'Validate settings on exit' button
16) Click 'OK'

Next is to Set the server within the scoring units. So firstly ensure that the PC is switched on and BridgePal Services Monitor are running. Open the Services Monitor, ensure that "Run Bridge Pal Broadcast" is ticked and then make a note of the IP Address which will look something like 192.168.x.x and should be the same as the IPv4 Address noted above.
Now switch on all the scoring units and make sure they are attached to the same WiFi network as the PC. Then for each scoring unit:-
1) Start BridgePal
2) Click on the dots in top right of screen
3)Click on 'More>>'
4) Click on 'Select BridgePal Server'
5) Click on '<Add New Server>'
6) Enter server name (Your club name  for example)
7) Enter the IP Address displayed by BP Services Monitor
8) Click on 'Add'
9) Click on the newly added server to select it

The scoring unit will now connect to the PC without any problems

BridgePal Phones/Tablets / Locking down Huawei T3 7" tablets
« on: August 03, 2019, 04:32:00 »
I recently purchased 7 Huawei T3 tablets for our club. After performing all the usual set up items I was disappointed to find that kiosk mode would not work. I now have a solution to this.

1) Open settings
2) Click on 'About'
3) Click on 'Build Number' 7 times until you see the 'You are now a developer' message
4) Go back to settings menu
5) Click on 'Developer Options'
6) Click on 'Demo Mode'
7) Select 'Enable'
8) Go back to Developer Options menu
9) Set 'Developer' to off
10) Restart the tablet

Kiosk mode can now be selected.

BridgePal Phones/Tablets / Re: 'Locking Down' Tablets
« on: August 03, 2019, 04:24:36 »
Yes, we found that you need to pin the program each time the tablet is started. One option is to leave them turned on and on charge.

However, an update---I managed to get kiosk mode working and will post the solution in a new post for others to find easily.

BridgePal Phones/Tablets / Re: 'Locking Down' Tablets

David, I have just bought some Huawei T3 7 inch tablets. These run Android 7.0 and I found that setting the kiosk mode would not work. However after a quick Google search I found that it is possible to pin an app to the screen. It is in the security tab of settings and seems to be a feature of Android 7 so may help with so.e of your units.

Here in Penang we had a similar debate after a visiting pair from the UK tried telling us that dummy SHOULD place the led suit on the left hand side as viewed by dummy. This was quickly dispelled, Reg is correct apart from the trump suit, the other suits can be placed in any order.

As for the led card, we have our scoring units set up so that the screen blanks out after 10 seconds. If it is a concern to you, you could do the same.

General Discussion / Re: Manual Hand Entry
« on: January 29, 2019, 10:43:49 »
John,

thank you for the reply. Clearly there are plenty of alternative ways to get the hands in that 'we' have not realised. I will pass this information along.
Thank you yet again
Alan

General Discussion / Manual Hand Entry
« on: January 29, 2019, 02:35:01 »
The popularity of the software has now started to propagate to our users social games. They do not have the benefit of a dealing machines. They have tried to do manual entry after playing a hand but keep forgetting to click on hand. An enhancement would be to prompt them for manual entry when required and prevent advancement until this is done.

Support / Re: Movements
« on: November 06, 2018, 23:11:07 »
Hi Mirna,
I would like to echo Peter's request. I have noticed the same issue when we run a Howell movement with a 1/2 table. For the last round a pair often does not get told where to go. Now we know about it we look out for it but the first time it happened I sent a pair home early!

Also like Peter I have a reserve to run things in my absence and her biggest worry is movement selection. A favourites list would be great.

Support / Delaying playing a board until later
« on: March 19, 2018, 09:02:38 »
We are a new club with some quite novice players. This is generally not a problem if I can get all the novices sitting in the same orientation but if novice pair 1 sitting NS comes up against novice pair 2 sitting EW they can fall a complete board behind.

I can of course just enter 'Not Played' but it would be nice to suggest they stay back and play the board at the end of the session. Is this possible?

I think I might have just answered my own question. Enter the board as not played and then manually update in BridgeScore later on before posting the result. In which case 'is there a better way'?

Club Tips / Using BridgePals in Penang
« on: December 05, 2017, 00:50:33 »
Penang Bridge Club (Malaysia) relies on an expat with lots of sophisticated equipment to score for the club. But like many of our expat players the scorer can be away travelling for extended periods. The club needed a cheap backup to accommodate this. John very kindly has allowed us to use the BridgePal system.

Not wishing to spend money until the system is proven and funds were available (another story) we decided to trial BridgePal using players hand phones. The first problem for anyone wanting to download the app from the android app-store is that it is geographically locked to the UK but the very useful link on the setting up scoring units page quickly solved this problem. The next problem was that some of our players are elderly and need to sit north/south and almost without exception they seemed to own iPhones. These hand phones proved to be very frustrating to set up using the web browser method as described on the using non-android devices page. Most but not all of the phones (I think operating system version dependent) would refuse to connect to a network without an internet connection. Suspecting this might be a problem within Safari users were asked to download Chrome onto their iPhones. This corrected the problem for many of the phones but continued with the latest versions.

Excellent support from John brought up this https://discussions.apple.com/thread/7705927?start=0 link which confirms there is an issue with phones using version 10 of the operating system. To get around this we are requesting access to the WiFi network where we play. To ease life that means fixing the IP address of our laptop. A good reference for doing this can be found here https://portforward.com/networking/static-ip-windows-10.htm.
