Support / Re: Tablets Not Remaining Connected

This is a classic example of something hogging the PC resources. It is most likely the virus checker or less likely the disk defragmenter. It could also be Windows Update running in the background. These will run when they think that the PC is not used, i.e. neither the keyboard nor the mouse are used. BridgePal code running in the background is not recognised as user activity. As soon as you touch the mouse or press a key on the keyboard, they will pause and BridgePals will be allowed to work again.
This issue and the remedies for it are described in some detail on the BridgePal website under PC Setup.

General Discussion / BridgeDealer
« on: March 15, 2024, 16:09:07 »
BridgeDealer is an app for manual dealing of pre-set hands or reading of hand-shuffled hands.

Install BridgeDealer app from google play store or from BridgePal website. It runs on Android 4.4 or later. You can run BridgeDealer on Amazon Fire tablets but the app is not on the Amazon app store. You can download it from the BridgePal website (see section on Scoring Unit Setup) on the BridgePal website.

The app is fully integrated with BridgePal. It can either be used from within BridgePal to deal a preset hand before it is played or to read a hand shuffled deal into a PBN file.

BridgeDealer does not generate the hands itself. You need to generate a PBN file using a random deal generator. For example, download the Dealer4 PC software from www.dealer4.com. This software is for the Dealer4 dealing machine, but you can use it for creating a PBN file of random deals even if you don't have the dealing machine. The software is free of charge.

In BridgeScore you can load the PBN file for an event via the Hand Records menu item in the Wireless Options menu. In other scoring programs there is another way perhaps ('Import Deal' in EBUScore for example). However, the easiest way is probably to load the PBN file via BridgePal Server Settings page.

If you want to deal the boards from BridgePal you need to tick the "Deal Preset Hands" checkbox on the BridgePal Server settings page, after starting the event from the scoring program. Providing that you have the BridgeDealer app installed on BridgePals you will then see a "Deal" button on the contract entry screen for a board. If you click on this button it will transfer control directly to the BridgeDealer app to deal that particular board. After the board has been dealt use the Back key on the scoring unit (if there is one) to exit BridgeDealer and return to the contract entry screen of the BridgePal app. If the scoring unit does not have a back key then a right to left swipe gesture should have the same effect.

You can also deal any board at any time after wireless scoring has been started via  the Player Functions menu on the BridgePal device, select "Deal Board" followed by the board number. It is envisaged that this can be used by somebody at the sitout table.

Because the BridgeDealer app uses the front camera of the tablet and reads the pack from underneath the players can't see the cards while the board is being dealt.

To read a previously shuffled hand into a PBN file, the process is very similar to dealing.
In BridgeScore tick Enter Hand Records in the Hand Records menu item of the Wireless Options menu. The hands will be read into hands_entered folder, file name is automatically allocated. You can instead tick Enter Hand Records on the BridgePal Server Settings page. Again the folder and file name is automatically allocated (different to BridgeScore) - you can see it on the Settings page.

On BridgePal, shuffle and play a hand and then on the traveller page click on Hand and then Edit. You will be given a choice to Read Cards (via BridgeDealer) and Manual Entry (where you don't use BridgeDealer but enter hand manually, card by card).

Similar to deal you can read any board via Player Functions menu on the BridgePal device, select "Read Board" followed by the board number. Again this can be used by somebody at the sitout table.

There is a help page in the BridgeDealer app, but to see it you need to start the BridgeDealer app manually (i.e. not from the BridgePal app) and tap on the Demo button. It takes a bit of practice to develop fluency in dealing the cards using the app and some people may find it more difficult than others. In principle you could deal all the boards yourself before the start of the session, but obviously it's quicker if you can get several people doing this in parallel. One other point to make is that I can't guarantee it will work with all brands of cards, but I did test several common brands when it was developed.

Support / Information on BridgeDealer

I am a member at HDBC and helped set up BridgePal and BridgeScore at our club. We have had it running successfully for 15 months now and the members are very pleased with it. We have been loading results to our website on BridgeWebs including the hand information which we are loading after each board is played in the first round.

The club is wanting to look at pre dealt hands. The club cannot financially afford a Duplimate machine so wants to look at BridgeDealer. I have struggled to find detailed information about BridgeDealer on your website. I have seen the video of its operation but cannot find information about the software and how it integrates with BridgePal/ BridgeScore. We want to generate hands for up to 32 boards at a time as this is about the maximum we can play on a club evening. I have some questions:

1. Does BridgeDealer generate the random hands itself or is a further piece of software required for this.
2. How does BridgeDealer link hands to BridgeScore for upload to our website.
3. BridgeDealer software is Android, can we run it on one of our Amazon Fire tablets that we use for BridgePal?

If you think there is anything else that would help me understand the software please let me know.

You can also deal any board at any time after wireless scoring has been started on BridgeScore. You can even do this before inputting the table number on BridgePal. Select the Player Functions menu on the BridgePal tablet then select "Deal Board" followed by the board number.

Because the BridgeDealer app uses the front camera of the tablet and reads the pack from underneath the players can't see the cards while the board is being dealt.

You can run BridgeDealer on Amazon Fire tablets but it is not on the Amazon app store. You can download it from the BridgePal website (see section on Scoring Unit Setup). You will need to enable installation of apps from 3rd party sources, but I assume this will have been done already when the BridgePal app was installed.

There is a help page in the BridgeDealer app, but to see it you need to start the BridgeDealer app manually (i.e. not from the BridgePal app) and tap on the Demo button. Hope this helps. Grateful if you could keep me posted on how you get on with it.

Support / Missing Names from EBUScore

Received by email:

We have been successfully running BridgePals for 12 months now but last night encountered a problem in that player names did not appear despite entering their pid. We ended up with 4 no name on each table. I assume we have somehow managed to do this but can't seem to rectify it. Are you able to help please? We use EBU Score.

--------------------------------------------------------
Reply from John:

I think the most likely explanation is that someone has inadvertently changed a BCS setting in EBUScore. After you have created an event go to the BridgePal scoring screen in EBUScore, click on the "Set BCS Options" button and then on the Bridgemate II tab. Make sure that the "Name Source" box on the display is set to "Player & EBU Names Table" and click on OK. Do this before clicking on the "Create Database" button. I think EBUScore will remember the settings, so you don't have to do this each time you create a new event.

If this doesn't work, check that BridgePal Server has the same setting. Start wireless scoring, click on the BridgePal Server icon on the Windows taskbar (looks like two overlapping tablets with blue screens), then click on Settings in the menu bar. The names lookup field should be showing "Club, then National", providing that the box "Allow Scoring Program to Set/Modify BCS Settings" at the bottom of the Settings display is ticked (it will be by default unless someone has changed it).

I'm assuming of course that the names database is populated in EBUScore.

Hope this helps.

Club Tips / Gwen's Bridge Club

Gwen's Bridge Club - an enthuastic new user with a few tips.

From Gwen Beattie, St Annes - "28 happy bunnies" - Very well received by all players! This particular group is from the U3A (University of the 3rd Age); they come twice a year to the same hotel (Inn on the Prom) in St Annes for a bridge break, have been doing for the last 10 years! I refer to them as 'Shirley's Bridgers' (Shirley is the organiser). I just go in and run the bridge for them.
There were only 7 tables this time so I used 7 Amazon Fire 7-inch tablets. I have 3 old Android phones with BridgePal installed that I took as back-up but didn't need them.

I have another group (not U3A, from clubs all over the north-west) coming early March and there'll be up to 9 tables then, so I'll be ordering another couple of Amazon Fire tablets (re-furbished from E-bay, about 38 GBP each).

Support / Missing scores from EBUScore

Message sent by a new user:
"Hi, We had our first trial session at ... Bridge Club yesterday.
Everything was fine and at the end the tablets were showing the full
results and score cards etc however not all of the results and names
were on EBUScore only some. Fortunately we completed paper travellers so
all was not lost. Any idea where we went wrong? Many thanks."

Reply sent to the user:
"The likely reason is that you did not leave EBUScore on the BridgePal
Scoring screen, for example you might have gone to a different screen to
look at travellers and left it there. EBUScore will only retrieve
results from the wireless database while it's on the BridgePal Scoring
screen. You can still recover the data as it will all be in the wireless
database on the PC. Start EBUScore, retrieve the event, go the
BridgePal scoring screen, click on the "Restart" button, then on "Create
Database" and then on the button "Resume Existing Session...". If you
then click on the "Read Names" and "Read All Results" buttons EBUScore
will retrieve all the data for that session from the wireless database."

Support / Re: Connection Issue
« on: February 03, 2024, 13:30:56 »
I had a similar issue one day when we had two laptops in the club, one for scoring and one for some admin. Both had BridgePal software installed. To solve the problem you don't have to remove BridgePal Monitor from startup. Just click on the BridgePal Services Monitor on the task bar and untick the box "Run BridgePal Broadcast", then click on Save as Default.
At home we have several laptops all with BridgePal software installed. We use them for development/ testing. They all normally have the box "Run BridgePal Broadcast" unticked, and this only gets ticked when BridgePal is in use.
One of our users used to have a mysterious problem in their evening club session. BridgePals kept disconnecting and reconnecting every few seconds just like in your case. The colleagues from the afternoon club never had any problems. Eventually they found out that the afternoon club used to leave their laptop inside the cabinet, apparently hibernating, but BridgePal Broadcast was still busily broadcasting. I think after this they made sure the afternoon club's computer is always shut down at the end of session.

We have been informed that this problem in Scorebridge has now been fixed. You need to install the latest version of Scorebridge R10.23.02.

Also it is worth keeping in mind that if you want to be able to display hand records you need at least 5 inch screen. We used to find 4 inch screen too small although the display did fit. Our Alcatel POP 4 with 5 inch screen is ideal. Our members all say they really liked them. However when they are given any of our 7 inch tablets, they always feel really privileged. 🙂 Alcatel POP 4 have a fantastic battery, it lasts for 3 sessions. I found that some sellers replace the original battery with an inferior one. I returned one like this on one occasion and didn't buy anything any more from this seller even when he offered to replace the battery with the original one.

I would just like to add that regardless of which device you choose, it might be a good idea to buy just one first and check that it is suitable. It is worth checking that battery life is reasonable and the screen size and responsivness is satisfactory.

Thanks for the info, Jeremy. I am sure our other users will find this useful. I found this link for Fire Toolbox V30.2

I converted an old Kindle into a standard Android tablet a few years ago -  see my post here. Of course I could then install BridgePal launcher on it easily. It might be possible to do this with a modern Kindle too. If you are inclined to try this you might want to search Youtube for something like "Turn your Amazon fire Tablet in a Google Android tablet".

Support / Re: Beware minimising the View Movement form
« on: March 10, 2023, 11:11:38 »
You can in fact see a little icon at the bottom left hand side of the screen as shown on the pictures. If you click on the heart icon it will display a menu with Restore / Close options. If you click on double window it will just restore the minimised form. I admit this not very obvious and the minimise button is completely unnecessary, so I will remove it in the next release of BridgeScore.
