Hi Peter.
Welcome to a very satisfied group of users. Other clubs are missing out....

Hi Alaric
Good to know.
Always a bit wary when an upgrade to Windows happens   :)

General Discussion / Re: internet interferences

Hi
Sounds frustrating. Not sure what is going on and I am no expert on routers. However, as you probably know that by "locking" all the phones and laptop into the router you have created your own unique environment. I have been running a similar set up to your over 2 years and never experienced this. I can only think that the router signal is being blocked by something.

Would suggest the following:-
1) Set it up somewhere other than the hall you are using it  e.g. At Home and see if it works ok then. If Not, then I wonder if it's the router? If Yes then I think it's the hall you are in.

2) Try positioning the router, elsewhere and if you can get it up higher than present this may help.

Hi
We follow a process similar to the johng reply.
In fact sometimes when more than 1 person is setting the system up the phones are turned on by one person and the laptop and router by another, often meaning the phones are on before the laptop and router.
Also, there is no problem if a wrong movement is defined e.g. late arrivals. Once the new movement is defined and the wireless session restarted on the laptop, the members just press start to get the session going. This is very quick

BridgePal Router / Re: Running a Bridge Session without a Router
« on: January 28, 2018, 18:27:28 »
Why indeed.
Always amazes me that Microsoft know what's best for us. Surely can't have  caused them a problem to leave it in, just like lots of other things they hav removed over the years.
Looks like I will be sticking to my trusty router.
Thanks for the article, very interesting.

We have never had a problem.
When EW arrive at the table NS check they have the correct pair. in cases where North has moved on from the screen displaying pair numbers and names, the correct pairing can be verified by checking the display at the top.
If one EW pair is on the wrong place than so is another so the chances are close to zero. Finally if an error in seating has occurred this can be corrected during the evening.
Personally I think it would be too much information.
Why do you need to confirm something that has already been agreed?
The way I look at this is that this is not trying to replicate a paper traveller, it is providing an efficient method of recording and scoring.
In a year of use, averaging over 7 tables, this has never happened. Also I am in touch with other clubs who use BridgePal and they have never had this issue.
Once the accept button is presses and you go into the traveller screen, then pair numbers are displayed. This fulfils your requirements, because at this stage the pair numbers are displayed. So why have it on the previous page?
I for one would vote against this development.

BridgePal Router / Re: Running a Bridge Session without a Router

Interesting idea.
Not sure but I would think most people using BridgePal will just want the simplicity of just plugging a cheap router in and everything works.
It's certainly worth knowing if you get stuck without a router or want to pursue this router. Does it work for Windows10?

1)If the "Real Name" is entered during the session then when the players move to the next table the correct names will be shown.
2) if the "Real Name" is entered and the phone is still on the screen with player names if you select refresh from the menu options the phones will show the correct name.
In 99% of cases it will the scenario 1) above as they will probably be on a contract screen when you enter the correct name.

At our club, this is a source of amusement when greeting players as "No Name"

3) If the results are posted with "No Name" then alter BridgeScore and repost.

If you want to avoid "No Name" you could set up a couple of ID's that are more friendly / club standard . e.g. Guest 1 , 2 etc. You could assign easy to remember numbers e.g. Guest 1 is id 101 etc.

Then at some stage change Guest to the right name.

In practice putting a new name in is less than 1 minute. Simply go into player names and type in the new name. You will see an option appear that allows you to add a new name. It's the same if a player has entered the wrong ID and you want to change a name i's pretty much the same.

I have found that the screen before that details the player names and pair numbers does this and it is at this stage before any boards are played that players confirm they are in the right place.
Pair numbers often get forgotten or confused, especially in something like a Howell or Hesitation Mitchell so the names are a guarantee.
I often hear a North saying, we are not expecting you we want Bill & Fred or an EW saying are you expecting us?
Once they get playing the board the traveller is another good check.

Hi All.  Reg from Oxted Bridge Club here.

On a few occasions in the past we have used this facility in the way intended. For whatever reason an incorrect Table Number has been entered which has usually been discovered when the correct table tries to assign itself.
The correct table has taken over and the table that is in error simply restarts with the correct table number and pairs.
At most 1 score has been entered which is then overwritten. Only thing to watch for is that they have not got muddled up about the correct names for each table but usually ok and will be spotted as the pairs move round.
Couple of instances I can remember was innocent input of the wrong table number and also when I have re numbered the tables and someone has not noticed.

I would find it deplorable if anyone abused this facility and would ban them. Fortunately in our club I would bet my last penny no saying it would never happen.

Personally I would insist that the functionality remains exactly the same. It's simple, it works and I do not know of any club in the time we have been using it having a problem.
As they say, "if it ain't broke, don't fix it"

Regards
Reg

Not 100% sure I understand which connection is dropping out.
But as part of the elimination process have you tried hard wiring the connection between the router and the PC. This will eliminate any wi fi connectivity issues between these 2 devices. If there is still a connection issue then it's between the tablet and the router.
I am not an expert on routers but do know some of them can be a bit tricky and that some companies semi lock down their routers. I remember one off the clubs had a sky router that had it's own nuances.
I have 3 routers I can use.
A Netgear one I purchased for £40
An old Belkin one that I have had 10+ years. This is my back up.
Both of these run fine using 12 devices
The hall router which is my ultimate back up and the one I connect to at the end of the evening to post the results.
They are all different makes and configuration so I think you have been a little unlucky with the BT router.

I noticed that my club laptop was running very slowly and the poor thing was taking ages to respond.
The culprit seemed to be WSAPPX  using 100% Disk. It is used for installing, uninstalling, and updating Store apps. Windows automatically updates Store apps in the background. This process starts when you link to a wireless network and on this occasion I was using a hotspot on my phone
If you really don’t care about these included apps, you can tell the Windows Store not to automatically update your apps by disabling automatic updates of Windows Store apps –  https://www.howtogeek.com/320261/what-is-wsappx-and-why-is-it-running-on-my-pc/ .

The best solution I have found to ALL these problems is to use a stand alone router that is not connected to the internet so that Windows does nothing whilst using BridgePAl

Thx Mirna. This is a really good point that users will appreciate. Reg
