BridgePal Phones/Tablets / Re: Lenovo Tab E7 Sale
« on: March 19, 2019, 15:01:31 »
I've set up 8 of these for a club a while back and they haven't given us any problems. The screens are maybe not quite as vibrant as the earlier Lenovo model, but no one at the club has commented so maybe I'm imagining it.

I recorded what I did as I set them up, as before, and can upload my notes if anyone is interested (I'll just need to remove references to our club name/website etc. first). One nice thing is that you can connect two of these tablets via Bluetooth and transfer the BridgePal and Caffeine apk files from the first you set up onto each subsequent one, which is much quicker than using the internet each time.

Support / Re: Contract and lead validation

Thanks John, that's what I thought. The boards come to us in carry bags with dated seals so that it would be difficult for anyone to look at them ahead of their use. I'll check with the person who does the dealing for us if he'd be willing to put a USB stick in with each set of boards.

Support / Contract and lead validation

Craven Arms Bridge Club has just started using pre-dealt hands, and has switched to a BridgeWebs web site to suit. We don't have a dealing machine so we're sharing one nearby. The pbn files for the boards are thus uploaded to BridgeWebs remotely and the hands only become available once the results have been added after each session. Now we have hand details it's noticeable that we're getting a fair number of 'impossible' leads (i.e. cards that aren't in the relevant hand) and if possible I'd like to use the contract and lead validation option on the scoring devices. Is that possible given our arrangement? The help I've read suggests I'd need to copy the pbn files onto the laptop running BridgeScore before the session. In theory I could get them sent to me but that defeats the 'lock' that we currently have on their availability.

Support / Re: Recent updates giving error messages - Windows XP?
« on: January 16, 2019, 10:38:09 »
John,

Thanks for going to all the trouble of downgrading a system to check. I haven't worked with XP for a long time - until now again. I got dire warnings about using IE and so 'uninstalled' it (or so I thought), also partly because I didn't want anything running in the background that wasn't absolutely necessary - the laptop is very old and low spec.

I'll install the IE8 patch as directed and I'm sure all will be OK.

Frequently Asked Questions / Re: How to enter an Adjusted Score?
« on: January 16, 2019, 10:27:09 »
Thanks John & Mirna,

I'll feed back to our Director's that you have this in hand. They know (because I constantly remind them) that you do all this work for free and produce new features, refinements and bug fixes at an amazing rate.

Frequently Asked Questions / Re: How to enter an Adjusted Score?
« on: January 15, 2019, 14:27:33 »
Hi Mirna, Is there any prospect of a 'Director Function' being added to allow setting an adjusted score of 50/50% or 60/40% as this has been requested by the Directors at our club? We had been leaving hands as Not Played but one of our members has recently been through training to become a Director and was told that he should always make a judgement and allocate an adjusted score. There has also been an article in the Jan 2019 issue of Bridge magazine to the same effect. We don't have non-playing Directors so we either have to make these adjustments at the end of play or someone has to try to ignore the played scores when using the BridgeScore 'Enter Scores' option, neither of which is ideal. If the 'Director Function' cannot easily be added an alternative would be the ability to enter a score at the laptop without seeing all the other scores, e.g. by entering Board number and N/S pair then showing just that one result for editing.  Thanks.

Support / Recent updates giving error messages - Windows XP?
« on: January 15, 2019, 14:04:50 »
I maintain BridgePal systems for 2 clubs, one running on Windows XP (SP3) and the other on Windows 8. Recent updates have resulted in error messages appearing when I start wireless scoring on Windows XP but not on Windows 8. The errors give an option to continue and all seems to work OK if I do that. This started a couple of updates back but as it wasn't fatal I held off in case you sorted it in a following update.

The first message is:

An error has occurred in the script on this page.

Line: 207
Char: 2
Error: 'classList' is null or not an object
Code: 0
URL: http://127.0.0.1:1357/bridgepal_server/BridgePalServer.php?gdbPath=C:/BridgePal&para=C:\BridgePal\BridgePal.exe%20/f:

Do you want to continue running scripts on this page?

And if I answer yes to this the second message is:

An error has occurred in the script on this page.

Line: 2203
Char: 1
Error: 'Element' is undefined
Code: 0
URL: http://127.0.0.1:1357/bridgepal_server/BridgePalServer.php?gdbPath=C:/BridgePal&para=C:\BridgePal\BridgePal.exe%20/f:

These are titled "Internet Explorer Script Error' but as IE is no longer supported/recommended for XP I have replaced it with Opera - so perhaps that's relevant?

I have installed BridgePalServices v2.0.2, BridgePal version 2.0.5, BridgeScore 4.0.5, Microsoft .NET Framework 4 and I have checked that the Apache server is uninstalled.

Any ideas?

Mirna's link opens the Apkpure page for the sqcubes Caffeine app that I've set up for the two clubs I maintain on my browser.
I couldn't get the same effect from the versions of Android I've been working with. I could set up so the screen switched off completely after 15 or 30 seconds, but not to just dim it and stay on. If the screen switched off then the power button had to be used to get it on again, which is much less convenient. Let me know if I've missed some Android setting please.

Hi, I just noticed Mirna's reference to the Tab E7. Cleobury Mortimer have only used these for one session so far but they seem OK. The club weren't happy buying from the internet so the cheapest I could find them in a physical store nearby was at Argos for £59.99 (they just missed a previous sale in which they'd been reduced to £49.99) - sorry if that sounds too much (I'd agree with Mirna that the refurbished ones are probably OK). The previous equivalent Lenovo tablet (the Tab3 Essential), which I acquired for Craven Arms bridge club (but is now out of production and unobtainable new), had an earlier version of Android but higher capacity battery. The only slight niggle I have with the newer tablets is that the screen goes very dim when the Caffeine app kicks in - I think this is down to the newer version of Android. I'm probably being overly critical as everyone got along fine with them last week. Good luck.

Hi all, Just a few thoughts. Do other apps close unexpectedly in a similar way? Have your tablets been connected to the internet since they worked, and are they set to auto-update apps? If so I've seen reports of this kind of behaviour being associated with a component app named Android System Webview for which the original factory version was OK but a later update causes this problem (but I'm not sure if this relates to your version of Android). The blog posts I saw said that uninstalling the updates, back to the factory installed version, fixed things. Also then make sure you disable auto-updates!

Club Tips / Re: Cleobury Mortimer Bridge Club - now using BridgePal
« on: November 18, 2018, 21:24:14 »
Thanks Mirna. No not lost exactly, but it's quite a long story! The website pre-dates me but was set up using Google Sites, which is a free but limited hosting service. Originally it supported the upload and linking of webpages, together with internal links, but Google later removed those options (I'm guessing for reasons to do with security). The only way we could find to get the results up in anything like the format generated was to paste the contents into a frame (I think that's the right terminology, I'm not really a website guy & the work-around was done by the original site developer). However that meant the internal links not only didn't work but did very strange things, so I wrote a little C# application to strip the links out - giving the current solution. Longer term I might try to talk the club onto a better website host/service but I'm not on the committee there. Thanks again for all the help and the wonderful software - I'm a big fan!

Club Tips / Cleobury Mortimer Bridge Club - now using BridgePal
« on: November 18, 2018, 14:26:20 »
Cleobury Mortimer Bridge Club held its first session with newly acquired tablets on Tuesday 13th November 2018. Prior to that the club had borrowed tablets from the nearby Craven Arms club (many thanks) to trial with a laptop and router donated by members. Needless to say everything went smoothly and everyone was keen to go ahead. The laptop is a 12 year old model running Windows XP and the router is an obsolete EE Bright Box 1, but both work fine. The club is using Lenovo Tab E7 tablets and these have had Caffeine installed. I got help with custom movements from Forum member JohnB and Mirna so thanks to them.

Thanks Mirna, I was aware of that behaviour and it does help. I've trained a few willing club members to deal with the system when I'm not available and anything that makes things simpler for them is a bonus. For the new club I'm setting up I've renamed the movements they use to match the names they're used to, and added a * at the beginning of each movement name so they they stand out in the list. It will all work fine on that basis.

Mirna - I'm sure you have lots of ideas and requests for new features but setting up for a small club that uses a limited range of movements led to a thought. Could you perhaps add a 'Favourite' (or equivalent) field to the movements database table, a tick box for it on the Movement Editor and 'Favourites' & 'All' radio buttons on the event Define Movement screen, with the 'Favourites' option filtering the drop down list of movements?

Thanks Mirna - I've got everything set up now but when testing have spotted a minor issue with end of round instructions. I set up a 4 tables, 28 boards, 7 rounds 'Howell - Superperfect' movement and set 'Missing Pair' as 6 (the club often ends up with a half table). I then played through the whole movement as a test and everything was OK except that the end of round instructions were incomplete if a pair was to move to a table where they would be sitting out. For example at the end of round 1 on table 4 - pair 4 E/W is instructed to move to table 2 N/S but pair 5 N/S are given no instructions but need to 'Sit Out at this table'. Likewise at the end of round 2 on table 2 - pair 7 E/W is told to Sit Out but not that they need to move to table 4 to do so. In all there are 7 such incomplete messages relating to the missing pair, one per round. At the end of the 6th (and thus penultimate round) table 3 is simply told that it is End of Session (because the last sit out, in round 7, happens there) so pair 7 N/S and pair 5 E/W are not told where to go. We will just have the movement cards on the tables for the time being, so this isn't terribly significant - but I thought you'd like to know.
