BridgePal Phones/Tablets / Re: Amazon Fire tablets - change launcher
« Last post by jeremychildexeter on March 20, 2023, 11:33:25 »
OK - did some research.

It is not currently possible to root current Fire tablets, so autoloading BridgePal isn't going to work.

I have however managed to remove the ads, lockscreen and other bloatware using Fire Toolbox (really easy to do).

So now I can get what I want (only Bridgepal) by using app (screen) pinning, but...

The back button is still active and allows the user to exit BridgePal.

Is there any chance there could be an option in BridgePal to disable the back button?

Thanks

Jeremy

I converted an old Kindle into a standard Android tablet a few years ago -  see my post here. Of course I could then install BridgePal launcher on it easily. It might be possible to do this with a modern Kindle too. If you are inclined to try this you might want to search Youtube for something like "Turn your Amazon fire Tablet in a Google Android tablet".

The password exists to prevent players messing up the tablet configuration by experimenting with the menu functions. The default password is "xxx" but can be changed. It is documented in the BridgePal App User Guide under the heading " Options>>Change Password".

However, it is still true that it won't make BridgePal the home screen on the Amazon Fire tablet. That's a consequence of the fact that Amazon see the Fire tablet primarily as a means of viewing books and media purchased through their website and therefore do their best to retain control over the home screen and the lock screen !

BridgePal Phones/Tablets / Amazon Fire tablets - change launcher

Some years ago (2018!) John said that "it isn't possible to make BridgePal the home screen on a standard Fire tablet"

Is this still the case?

When I try to do so it asks me for a password and I have no idea what password it's referring to - the tablet has no unlock password.

Thanks

Support / Re: Beware minimising the View Movement form

You can in fact see a little icon at the bottom left hand side of the screen as shown on the pictures. If you click on the heart icon it will display a menu with Restore / Close options. If you click on double window it will just restore the minimised form. I admit this not very obvious and the minimise button is completely unnecessary, so I will remove it in the next release of BridgeScore.

After selecting a movement it is useful to view the movement and select 'Table Card'. This shows where to place the boards for the first round which is essential if playing a Howell movement. We have found that if you minimise the form rather than closing it, the form disappears completely and cannot be recovered to close it. In this state BridgeScore is frozen and nothing can be done.

Hi Tony,
You need to go to Club Admin on the front page of BridgeScore and select Wireless on the Wireless Scoring panel.
You will then need to create a new event for this change to take effect - the existing old event can be deleted.
In the User Guide under the  Initial Setup it says: "Set your Club Details, Wireless Scoring details and BridgeWebs details if required." I guess the Wireless Scoring details would cover this.

Support / Problem setting-up BridgeScore

I'm trying to set-up BridgeScorer with BridgePal but having difficulty following the instructions here:

    https://www.mirgo2.co.uk/bridgescore/documents/BridgePalBridgeScoreGuide.pdf

I have the Event window open but as you can see in the attached screen shot there's no "Wireless Options" or "NGS" (whatever that is) menu options. I'm also unclear what the ellipsis after the "Handicaps" menu option mean. They don't seem to have any function.

I have my Wifi up and running just fine - I can browse the web from this PC.
The BridgePal app on my phone connects (once I've started BridgePalServices) but persistently reports "Session not yet started".

Clearly there's a WiFi communication problem, but how do I enable it?
I'm running Windows 10 if that's important. Also, probably not significant, but I rarely run Windows on this PC (it normally boots to Ubuntu) but it came with Windows installed. I've done nothing with it in that boot mode until now.

Tony.

Club Tips / Re: Running a session at Slams Bridge Club - Feb 2023

Very similar at Oxted.
We usually turn the router on first so that the laptop connects to it straight away.
We have Wi-Fi in the hall and if we turn the laptop on first it connects to the club Wi-Fi
Whilst the laptop is booting we turn the phones on.
We set up best guess of a movement to make sure al is well then get on with setting up.
We work on the basis that if technical things need sorting we do that first. Early arrivals can always help to set up.
We use the hall Wi-Fi to post the results and very occasionally a hot spot when the hall wi-Fi is playing up.
Good news on the router in another room and very good news on table numbers
