General Discussion / BridgeDealer
« on: March 15, 2024, 16:09:07 »
BridgeDealer is an app for manual dealing of pre-set hands or reading of hand-shuffled hands.

Install BridgeDealer app from google play store or from BridgePal website. It runs on Android 4.4 or later. You can run BridgeDealer on Amazon Fire tablets but the app is not on the Amazon app store. You can download it from the BridgePal website (see section on Scoring Unit Setup) on the BridgePal website.

The app is fully integrated with BridgePal. It can either be used from within BridgePal to deal a preset hand before it is played or to read a hand shuffled deal into a PBN file.

BridgeDealer does not generate the hands itself. You need to generate a PBN file using a random deal generator. For example, download the Dealer4 PC software from www.dealer4.com. This software is for the Dealer4 dealing machine, but you can use it for creating a PBN file of random deals even if you don't have the dealing machine. The software is free of charge.

In BridgeScore you can load the PBN file for an event via the Hand Records menu item in the Wireless Options menu. In other scoring programs there is another way perhaps ('Import Deal' in EBUScore for example). However, the easiest way is probably to load the PBN file via BridgePal Server Settings page.

If you want to deal the boards from BridgePal you need to tick the "Deal Preset Hands" checkbox on the BridgePal Server settings page, after starting the event from the scoring program. Providing that you have the BridgeDealer app installed on BridgePals you will then see a "Deal" button on the contract entry screen for a board. If you click on this button it will transfer control directly to the BridgeDealer app to deal that particular board. After the board has been dealt use the Back key on the scoring unit (if there is one) to exit BridgeDealer and return to the contract entry screen of the BridgePal app. If the scoring unit does not have a back key then a right to left swipe gesture should have the same effect.

You can also deal any board at any time after wireless scoring has been started via  the Player Functions menu on the BridgePal device, select "Deal Board" followed by the board number. It is envisaged that this can be used by somebody at the sitout table.

Because the BridgeDealer app uses the front camera of the tablet and reads the pack from underneath the players can't see the cards while the board is being dealt.

To read a previously shuffled hand into a PBN file, the process is very similar to dealing.
In BridgeScore tick Enter Hand Records in the Hand Records menu item of the Wireless Options menu. The hands will be read into hands_entered folder, file name is automatically allocated. You can instead tick Enter Hand Records on the BridgePal Server Settings page. Again the folder and file name is automatically allocated (different to BridgeScore) - you can see it on the Settings page.

On BridgePal, shuffle and play a hand and then on the traveller page click on Hand and then Edit. You will be given a choice to Read Cards (via BridgeDealer) and Manual Entry (where you don't use BridgeDealer but enter hand manually, card by card).

Similar to deal you can read any board via Player Functions menu on the BridgePal device, select "Read Board" followed by the board number. Again this can be used by somebody at the sitout table.

There is a help page in the BridgeDealer app, but to see it you need to start the BridgeDealer app manually (i.e. not from the BridgePal app) and tap on the Demo button. It takes a bit of practice to develop fluency in dealing the cards using the app and some people may find it more difficult than others. In principle you could deal all the boards yourself before the start of the session, but obviously it's quicker if you can get several people doing this in parallel. One other point to make is that I can't guarantee it will work with all brands of cards, but I did test several common brands when it was developed.

Support / Information on BridgeDealer

I am a member at HDBC and helped set up BridgePal and BridgeScore at our club. We have had it running successfully for 15 months now and the members are very pleased with it. We have been loading results to our website on BridgeWebs including the hand information which we are loading after each board is played in the first round.

The club is wanting to look at pre dealt hands. The club cannot financially afford a Duplimate machine so wants to look at BridgeDealer. I have struggled to find detailed information about BridgeDealer on your website. I have seen the video of its operation but cannot find information about the software and how it integrates with BridgePal/ BridgeScore. We want to generate hands for up to 32 boards at a time as this is about the maximum we can play on a club evening. I have some questions:

1. Does BridgeDealer generate the random hands itself or is a further piece of software required for this.
2. How does BridgeDealer link hands to BridgeScore for upload to our website.
3. BridgeDealer software is Android, can we run it on one of our Amazon Fire tablets that we use for BridgePal?

If you think there is anything else that would help me understand the software please let me know.

Reply from John:
BridgeDealer does not generate the hands itself. You need to generate a PBN file using a random deal generator. For example, download the Dealer4 PC software from www.dealer4.com. This software is for the Dealer4 dealing machine, but you can use it for creating a PBN file of random deals even if you don't have the dealing machine. The software is free of charge.

In BridgeScore you can load the PBN file for an event via the Hand Records menu item in the Wireless Options menu. If you want to deal the boards from BridgePal you need to tick the "Deal Preset Hands" checkbox on the BridgePal Server settings page, after starting the event from BridgeScore. Providing that you have the BridgeDealer app installed on the tablets you will then see a "Deal" button on the contract entry screen for a board. If you click on this button it will transfer control directly to the BridgeDealer app to deal that particular board. After the board has been dealt use the Back key (if there is one) to exit BridgeDealer and return to the contract entry screen of the BridgePal app. If the tablet does not have a back key then a right to left swipe gesture should have the same effect.

You can also deal any board at any time after wireless scoring has been started on BridgeScore. You can even do this before inputting the table number on BridgePal. Select the Player Functions menu on the BridgePal tablet then select "Deal Board" followed by the board number.

Because the BridgeDealer app uses the front camera of the tablet and reads the pack from underneath the players can't see the cards while the board is being dealt.

You can run BridgeDealer on Amazon Fire tablets but it is not on the Amazon app store. You can download it from the BridgePal website (see section on Scoring Unit Setup). You will need to enable installation of apps from 3rd party sources, but I assume this will have been done already when the BridgePal app was installed.

There is a help page in the BridgeDealer app, but to see it you need to start the BridgeDealer app manually (i.e. not from the BridgePal app) and tap on the Demo button. One other point I would make is that I can't guarantee it will work with all brands of cards, but I did test several common brands when it was developed.

Hope this helps. Grateful if you could keep me posted on how you get on with it.

Support / Missing Names from EBUScore
« on: February 21, 2024, 18:32:36 »
Received by email:

We have been successfully running BridgePals for 12 months now but last night encountered a problem in that player names did not appear despite entering their pid. We ended up with 4 no name on each table. I assume we have somehow managed to do this but can't seem to rectify it. Are you able to help please? We use EBU Score.

--------------------------------------------------------
Reply from John:

I think the most likely explanation is that someone has inadvertently changed a BCS setting in EBUScore. After you have created an event go to the BridgePal scoring screen in EBUScore, click on the "Set BCS Options" button and then on the Bridgemate II tab. Make sure that the "Name Source" box on the display is set to "Player & EBU Names Table" and click on OK. Do this before clicking on the "Create Database" button. I think EBUScore will remember the settings, so you don't have to do this each time you create a new event.

If this doesn't work, check that BridgePal Server has the same setting. Start wireless scoring, click on the BridgePal Server icon on the Windows taskbar (looks like two overlapping tablets with blue screens), then click on Settings in the menu bar. The names lookup field should be showing "Club, then National", providing that the box "Allow Scoring Program to Set/Modify BCS Settings" at the bottom of the Settings display is ticked (it will be by default unless someone has changed it).

I'm assuming of course that the names database is populated in EBUScore.

Hope this helps.

Club Tips / Gwen's Bridge Club
« on: February 10, 2024, 15:35:43 »
Gwen's Bridge Club - an enthuastic new user with a few tips.

From Gwen Beattie, St Annes - "28 happy bunnies" - Very well received by all players! This particular group is from the U3A (University of the 3rd Age); they come twice a year to the same hotel (Inn on the Prom) in St Annes for a bridge break, have been doing for the last 10 years! I refer to them as 'Shirley's Bridgers' (Shirley is the organiser). I just go in and run the bridge for them.
There were only 7 tables this time so I used 7 Amazon Fire 7-inch tablets. I have 3 old Android phones with BridgePal installed that I took as back-up but didn't need them.

I have another group (not U3A, from clubs all over the north-west) coming early March and there'll be up to 9 tables then, so I'll be ordering another couple of Amazon Fire tablets (re-furbished from E-bay, about 38 GBP each).

Support / Missing scores from EBUScore

Message sent by a new user:
"Hi, We had our first trial session at ... Bridge Club yesterday.
Everything was fine and at the end the tablets were showing the full
results and score cards etc however not all of the results and names
were on EBUScore only some. Fortunately we completed paper travellers so
all was not lost. Any idea where we went wrong? Many thanks."

Reply sent to the user:
"The likely reason is that you did not leave EBUScore on the BridgePal
Scoring screen, for example you might have gone to a different screen to
look at travellers and left it there. EBUScore will only retrieve
results from the wireless database while it's on the BridgePal Scoring
screen. You can still recover the data as it will all be in the wireless
database on the PC. Start EBUScore, retrieve the event, go the
BridgePal scoring screen, click on the "Restart" button, then on "Create
Database" and then on the button "Resume Existing Session...". If you
then click on the "Read Names" and "Read All Results" buttons EBUScore
will retrieve all the data for that session from the wireless database."

Support / Results missing when using EBUScore
« on: March 13, 2020, 09:50:34 »
From recent emails::

User question:
We had an 8 1/2 tables, played a Mitchell, forgot to input arrow switch so one of our members who uses EBU Score updated the movement. All ok on the tablets and final result shown ok but there was nothing in EBU Score, just names. How can we recover the scores from the Tablets ?
It was EBU Stratified pairs so if we can?t recover the scores there will be a lot of annoyed and disappointed members .

John answer:
I don't think anything will have been lost. Whoever made the changes in EBU Score probably forgot to return to the scoring screen in EBU Score. EBU Score only reads results from the wireless database (which is on the PC) while it is in the BridgePal scoring screen. You just need to restart the event in EBU Score and it will read the results from the wireless database. If it doesn't, then use the "Read All Results" function. You don't need to have the tablets connected in order to do this, as no data is stored in the tablets.
If you need further guidance, let me know.

User:
Brilliant, many thanks, something else I?ve learnt !

John answer:
Great ! By the way, I would try to avoid making changes to the movement once BridgePal Server has been started - we wouldn't recommend it as the server may not cope with all types of change that are possible, particularly adding or deleting tables. It would also be problematic if some of the boards have already been played and the change in movement affects where they are placed. Assuming any setup errors are detected early on, it's best to stop wireless scoring, define a new event, then start wireless scoring and have people re-enter results for any boards played so far (hopefully, only one or two). After you start the new event on the PC, BridgePal will automatically switch to it when the user taps OK on the current screen - they will find themselves back on the start screen again.

If you think a pair may turn up late you can include an extra pair when you set up the movement. If they don't turn up, just enter "No Play" on the BridgePal for the boards at the tables where they would have played.

Just to let you know that Newmarket BC have given the go ahead for your wireless scoring and I'll have them configured in the next two weeks.
We shall be using Amazon Fire 7 tablets, a new 179GBP HP laptop and a redundant Netgear router. For an 8 table set around 700GBP and a few hours of hard work setting it up!!

Club Tips / Slams Bridge Club
« on: February 10, 2020, 11:34:46 »
Email from Slams bridge Club - 2019:

Purchase

At Slams Bridge Club I can, on rare occasions, have as many as 18 tables and therefore needed this number of tablets plus some spares.  I bought 24 Lenovo TB7  7104F units at 36GBP  each, buy one get second 5% off on eBay.

In addition the tablets needed protection.  Cases were 6GBP  each, again from eBay and again 5% off the second of each pair.  It's pointless have new shiny tablets only for them to be damaged in no time.  My cases are simple "snap in" and "fold over to close", nothing fancy.  Do make sure you get cases that fit the tablets, universal ones may not be suitable, and the hole for the power socket could be in the wrong place.

Total cost for 24 units with cases was a little under 1000GBP.

Problems

When first used I had some teething problems caused by laptop settings.  Background tasks were tying up computer resources which caused the BridgePals to freeze.  Thankfully these problems have been resolved thanks to a good friend of mine. (disk defrag was causing freezes see this Forum post)

A second problem I encountered was with the router.  The one I was using was definitely old and on occasions it stopped working.  Identifying the problem was the hard bit.  Replacing the router was easy and seems to have done the trick.  I now use a TP-Link router (32.99GBP from Amazon).

Operation

The users most definitely like the tablets.  Previously I used BridgeMate Pro which were second hand when I acquired them (I have a 17 unit set available for 200GBP if anybody wants them).

Between sessions there are two essential tasks that have to be carried out:

* the tablets will need cleaning.  They will be covered in fingerprints and worse.

* the tablets will need charging.  Mine use 50% of their charge each session probably because the screen is full on all the time.  The BridgePal website does point users towards a piece of software called Caffeine which will dim the display after 1 minute of non-use but I haven?t got round to installing it.  I have an Anker 10 port charging unit (does 10 at a time) that I bought through Amazon for 26.99GBP that does the job.  I haven't timed it, but I`d say it takes about 3 hours to fully charge a set of 10 tablets.

I hope some of this helps.

Support / Swapping Device on iPad
« on: January 25, 2020, 10:05:33 »
Question received via email:

Q:
I am running BridgeScore/BridgePal on a combination of iPads and tablets all running from the IP address and not the app.
On the tablet there is an option on the screen to swap out devices but not on the iPad. How do I swap out an iPad please.

A:
I assume you are referring to the Director's Functions, such as "Replace Failed Unit". You can access these from the iPad as described on this page on the BridgePal website (see paragraph "Accessing Special Functions").

Support / Images for Festive Season on BridgePal
« on: December 15, 2019, 15:14:10 »
If you wish you can change the images on BridgePal for the festive season.

On the laptop if you go to C:/Bridgepal/htdocs/images -

- rename picture1.gif into say picture1KEEP.gif and then picgure1xmas1.gif to picture1.gif. You will see Rudolf when entering table no

- rename picture2.gif to say picture2KEEP.gif and then picture2xmas2.gif to picture2.gif. You will see christmas tree when entering name IDs

There are other images to use for example picture1NY.gif. You can create your own images, make sure they are given the correct name (i.e. picture1.gif or picture2.gif) and size.

Support / BridgeScore Screen Small

An email trail:

User:
" I wonder if there's some way that the "form" image can be made bigger. None of us unspectacled, and when for example we were amending a score (entered in the wrong polarity <hand dealt hands>) it was difficult to see"

M:
"I assume your screen resolution is quite high which makes BridgeScore small on the screen.
Maybe there is a choice of screen resolution on your laptop."

User:
"I've had a look and changing the resolution doesn't seem to work, but what does work is to "Change the size of text, apps and other items". The laptop we use only allows 125% but my desktop gives the choice of 125%,150% and 175%. Nevertheless the 125% is a great improvement.
For the record the laptops we use are exclusively for Bridgepal/Bridgescore so if there are any side effects they are irrelevant to us.
This is how to do it in Windows 10:

Click Windows icon at the bottom left of your screen
Settings (cogwheel icon)
System
Display screen appears
Under Scale and layout the first box is "Change the size..."
Its default is "100% recommended" but can be increased - in our case on a 10" by 6" screen to 125%.
Then just exit Settings
Click on Bridgescore icon and see the difference."

An excerpt from an email from our user in India:

Dear John and Mirna,

This is just to inform you that a Swiss Pair Open event was conducted over the weekend at Trivandrum Kerala (Brochure attached). Happy to inform you (due to a technical issue with ...) that the Director was able to improvise on the spot and run the entire event in 2 sections successfully using Bridgepal (on players' Android phones) with Jeff Smith scoring software. Results of the tournament are available on the Tamilnadu Bridge Association (TNBA) site

General Discussion / Getting Started in Ireland
« on: October 28, 2019, 15:18:25 »
The bridge clubs in Ireland mainly use Scorebridge. We have several users there (that we know of). Here is an email from one of our established users there to a potential new user. We thought it might help any other potential new user:

" The items you will need to run BridgePal Scoring system for your club are:
A laptop running BridgeScore (free) or ScoreBridge with the WiFi licence,
(I believe you already have ScoreBridge with the WiFi licence),
A router, to create a private network for use by your club, Internet access not required and
a 7inch Android Tablet for each table, running the BridgePall app.
See https://mirgo2.co.uk/bridgepal/ for full details on BridgePal.

I bought 16 Alcatel Tablets with covers for 75 Euro each from Power City in Blanchardstown.
They were 70 Euros and 11 Euros respectively but I managed to get a fiver or so knocked off.
You can shop around for the tablets and you will find cheaper ones on-line, I wanted to buy from a retail outlet
where I could deal with a real person, if I had any issues etc.

We use a TP-Link AC750 Dual-Band Wi-Fi 4G Router, which I got from Argos, about 120 Euros.
The system does not require an expensive router but it must support WiFi standard g, n or later.

You will need to download the BridgePal app, free, from Google Play Store, onto each tablet,
(as someone said to me, any problems ask a 10 year old).

The tablets will need charging and you can get 4-way or 8-way 'multi usb connector' which allows
4 or 8 tablets to be charged from a single socket. We use some 4-ways that I got from Power City, a brand called Trust.
They cost about 10 Euros each. Well worth it for convenience. (Not sure of the correct term for this adapter)

Total cost , for your 10 tables, should work out around 900 Euros versus almost double that I think you paid for
BridgeMates, which you eventually returned as unsuitable.
We're using the system well over a year in Ratoath and since the start of this season in Ashbourne and Navan of course
also use it and we've found it works very well, easy to use and very good graphics.

I believe you don't use BridgeWebs, I would highly recommend it, costs about 45 Euro a year but is not at all necessary for this system.

If you have any queries at all, let me know, call, text, e-mail etc and I'm quite happy to help you setup the system
and run thru a few 'trial runs' with you. If you managed BridgeMates, you'll have no problem with BridgePal.
"

We have subsequently suggested using a cheaper router, e.g. this TP Link router from Amazon

Support / Hand Diagrams on Webpage
« on: September 17, 2019, 11:21:15 »
Question from a user:

I have started a very small bridge club for less experienced players.  We use the BridgeScore and BridgePal software which is fantastic.
I manually upload the results to my website using Make Webpage on the results page in BridgeScore.  If it’s possible to use the bridge solver software as well that would be perfect.

Reply:

On BridgeScore Results page Preferences menu – tick Hand Diagrams.
This will ensure that you are prompted for the pbn file when you Make Web Page and also insert a ‘Play it again’ link under each diagram, which starts Bridge Solver.
You can try the link on the htm webpage before you upload to your website.
